Established in 1965 and celebrating more than 40 years
of performances, WomenSing is a 55-member auditioned chorus whose reputation for excellence draws members from five counties of the San Francisco Bay Area, including Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Solano, and Sonoma. Singing with a vibrant and beautifully blended sound, WomenSing performances feature great landmarks of the treble repertoire in addition to seldom-performed works, new music, and popular music of all eras.

WomenSing has performed in singing tours to Mainland China; Vancouver, British Columbia; Mexico; and Argentina. WomenSing routinely adds unique elements to their regular performance season with participation in invitational concert series, the commissioning of new works, outreach concerts in partnership with Bread and Roses and collaborative concerts with major performing groups such as Dimensions Dance Theater of Oakland, San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, Jubilate Orchestra, Young People’s Symphony Orchestra, Piedmont Choirs, and Contra Costa Children’s Chorus. Annual workshops are held with such noted conductors as Joseph Jennings, Charles Bruffy, and Josephine Lee.

Mission Statement

Believing that music is transformative and enlightening for both singer and listener alike, WomenSing is devoted
to the study and performance of great choral repertoire and to sharing it with a
broad audience.

"The chorus has a good sound, is well blended and expressive. I enjoyed it most when the tone was allowed to be full and robust … there were a good variety of tone qualities, and the diction was clear. Martín’s conducting is expressive, enthusiastic, and precise."

Joseph Liebling,
Director Emeritus,
Oakland Symphony Chorus

Outreach

WomenSing is unprecedented in its program of benefit performances. Proceeds from designated concerts are donated to agencies that promote the well-being of women or children. Beneficiaries include Safe House of San Francisco, George Mark Children’s House, and the Transition Learning Center.

WomenSing also regularly joins with well-known and respected Bay Area non-profit Bread and Roses to bring quality music to audiences who live in institutions or are otherwise isolated from society. WomenSing has performed at facilities in Oakland and in San Francisco.
