Artistic Director

A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Martín Benvenuto received his Licenciado en Musica degrees in Choral Conducting and Composition. He proceeded to earn his Master's degree from Westminster Choir College, double-majoring in Choral Conducting and Vocal Performance and Pedagogy. He is currently a candidate for the DMA in Choral Conducting at Boston University. Benvenuto has studied conducting under Antonio Russo, Nestor Andrenacci, Eric Ericson, Joseph Flummerfelt, Josep Prats, Robert Sund, Ann Howard Jones, and the late Robert Shaw, and has led church music programs and community choruses both in this country and his native Argentina.

Active as a clinician, panelist, and guest conductor, Martín Benvenuto joined WomenSing as Artistic Director in the fall of 2002, and also holds positions at Piedmont Choirs and is the artistic director of the Peninsula Women's Chorus.

"This group makes a very strong statement: we want to put our music out there. I always think that choral music is somewhat about some sort of rebelliousness, a movement against an artistic or political status quo. And what better venue is there than a choral setting to surrender your ego to a good cause? People not only give of their time, they also give up their cherished medium of individual expression, the voice. You have to abandon its narcissism for the well-being of the whole ensemble. In this day and age, when there is so little selflessness, choral singing is socially a very healthy activity."
